The audience is educated in various ways - necrophelia can be used to bring someone back to life; it apparently doesn't hurt at all to have your penis ring yanked and God really is a woman."

Ruby Toosday, transexual (described by her co-producer as a very sweet, but incredibly twisted man) plays God in this fast paced, sexy, entertainment-abound production. Co-director Paul Sardi, Australian and good friend of the designer of the original Rocky Horror Picture Show, plays Caiaphas - an enemy of Jesus who intends to stop him from gaining more followers of that ridiculous love, peace and happiness thing. His theatrical and powerful presence confirm the theory that "evil stops at nothing" and lets you know that for Jesus, it's just a matter of time.
Powerful, gothic music fills the theatre as God enters in white lingerie and pumps to begin the show. After making Mary Janet Virgin pregnant through a spiritual event involving a high-five, God has a cigarette and with the voice of Katherine Hepburn, she convinces Bradley Joseph Carpenter (Edward Lee) that Mary ("Damnit Janet") is in fact a virgin and that he should marry her, even in her pregnant state. Andy Bydalek does a fabulously comedic job with the role of Mary Janet and the fact that you can tell he is a man, makes him even funnier. Soooo, Joseph & Mary are wandering around the countryside when Mary's water breaks, but she refuses to give birth in a barn, so they knock on a castle in the town of Frankenfurter and are invited in by a frightening host. After the birth, three (J.A.P.) queens with Brooklyn accents come bearing compliments for the baby Jesus of Frankenfurter.
Baby Jesus grows up to be a gorgeous transvestite played by Ted Curtis who impeccably contributes to the show's star quality and professionalism. Curtis did a version of the lip synched R.H. Picture Show in Berkeley for many years and you'd never know he's had no formal drama training. Jesus struts on stage lavishly in black silk teddy, garter belt and platforms that put him around 6' 8". His fabulous curls, tall thin physique (not to mention a really sexy stomach) combine femininity, masculinity and make for great eye candy, regardless of what turns you on. Curtis says he puts in 4 hours before each show just for make up.
One of his main followers is Judas Riffscariot, played by Simone 3rd Arm (real life contortionist and dominatrix). Simone puts a seriously dramatic and emotional edge on the role of hunchback-hermaphrodite and sidekick of Jesus. Her costume includes a star trekkish, dwarf like face, biker boots and a huge penis that can be seen reaching her right knee under her tight black pants. Her unfulfilled love for Jesus and jealousy over his relations with the prostitute Mary Magdalene, ultimately transform her adoration into beytrayal.
Filling in for chronically fatigued Meg Gavin, Shane Bernard shone brightly as Mary Magdalene with the wide-eyed look of Orphan Annie and some fabulous dance numbers. Other noteworthy dancers were Trashina Cann (also choreographer), Dalila Jasmin and Lino Antonio who lit up the stage with fast, fresh moves. Lino told us he'll be playing John T. Baptist in next week's shows, but they'll be calling him Juan.
Some of the highlight acts were "Queen", "Last Dinner Party" complete with electric carving knife, "Garden Of Earthly Delights" and "Well... Hung" where it is asserted that one of Jesus' greatest attributes may have had something to do with his popularity. The production continues to be extended due to popular demand and will definitely run through 5/11/97. Don't miss it! Victoria Theatre, 2961 - 16th Street near Mission, San Francisco.
The Victoria Theatre is now featuring this two hour play originally written by Ruby Toosday and revamped/co-directed by Paul Sardi and Toosday. They have added some creative and fresh punches to the already beautifully bold vision of Toosday's original work of five years ago. It is a take-off combo of Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar.
